"Once upon a
time, in a far-off kingdom, there lived a young maiden, a sad young lad,
and a childless Baker and his wife..."
So
begins one of the most popular Broadway and West End musicals of all
time. Into the Woods mashes the plots of such favorite fairy
tales as Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel,
Little Red Riding Hood, and one original fairy tale, derived from
Rapunzel by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, The Baker and
his Wife. The characters of these stories journey into the woods to
get their wishes, but also reap what they sew.
A
1989 Broadway Favorite, Into the Woods (with music and lyrics by
Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine) received Tony Awards for
"Best Score of a Musical", "Best Book of a Musical",
and "Best Actress in a Musical" (Joanna Gleason as the Baker's
Wife). Since then, it has been played and revived in London's West End
as well as several other countries. The entire Original Broadway Cast
was also filmed live on stage performing the entire show, a recording
which has since been released on home video and DVD.
Needless
to say, this musical has stayed popular through its 12 year life. To
